Sunshine bathed the Boyndie Drome Circuit in golden light for the second round of the 2025 Boyndie Drome Open Challenge.

Spectators lined the barriers for a thrilling weekend of grassroots motorsport action, where our rental kart championship roared into battle on Saturday afternoon, and the owner-driver classes delivered edge-of-the-seat racing on Sunday.

The prestigious Cadet Cup and the fiercely contested Kildonan Shield were the feature trophies up for grabs-and the racing more than lived up to the billing.

This round was proudly sponsored by Rosebank Garage, Aberdeen.

Rental Karts (Light)

Ross Honeyman put on a clinic, building a commanding lead and crossing the line nearly 10 seconds clear. Behind, a fierce midfield battle saw Aiden Watson fend off Alan Towler, with Kacper Astner just edging out Greg Keith in a drag race to the finish.

Josh Orr, Kian Honeyman, and Oleg Kazakova broke away in a clean getaway, locking out the podium with metronomic pace. Warren Weber carved through the field for a hard-earned fourth, while Keith Dickie, Michael Rose, and Cooper Black scrapped for the remaining top-six positions.

Bambino (6-7 years old)

The youngest racers delivered big excitement. River Mackay nailed the start, but Archie Tosh soon hit the front and never looked back-lapping the field en route to victory. A spirited tussle between Josh Finlay and Alfie Falconer saw Finlay penalised for excessive weaving, handing third to Falconer.

Honda Cadets (8-12 years old)

Drama unfolded in the Cadet ranks as Jack Thomson and Aarryn Rigg surged ahead early. Thomson looked unstoppable until a brush with a backmarker spun him off, gifting Rigg the lead. But Thomson wasn’t done-he clawed back the gap and made a bold last-lap pass for a sensational win. Behind, Henderson led a lively pack with Bird, Bruce, and Forbes battling all the way to the flag.

Junior Max

Finlay Smith launched off the grid and never looked back, leading every lap for a dominant victory. The battle for second, however, was intense, with Duncan Ingram and Cruz Strachan engaging in a race-long scrap. The pair swapped positions multiple times, with Ingram edging out Strachan at the line. Kayden Thomas finished fourth ahead of Vinnie Lewis.

Senior Max (162kg)

Gary Robertson stormed into the lead at lights out, but Jonathan Edwards was on a charge. Picking off rivals with calculated precision-first Towler, then MacDonald, then Robertson-he built a 2.8-second gap by the flag in a dominant performance. A classy podium finish was completed by Robertson and MacDonald.

A textbook opening lap from Peter James Addison saw him grab the lead from Ben Noble. Despite relentless pressure from Noble, Addison held his nerve to claim top honours. Martin Stephen rounded out the podium with a consistent drive.

KZ2 Gearbox

In the KZ2 Gearbox class, Ross Greig got the jump off the line, but Ryan Simpson wasted no time, taking the lead at the end of Boyndie Straight on lap two. An early clash between Keiran Smart and Gordon Hawton disrupted the chasing pack, with both losing ground. Simpson controlled the race from the front, pulling out a three-second gap to take the win and the Kildonan Shield. Craig McKay grabbed third from Alex Hawcutt in the closing laps, while a recovering Smart fought back to fifth.
