Motorsport UK compliance isn’t the hurdle many think it is. For most drivers, the investment is modest – but the return is massive. From local circuits to Scotland’s National Championship, compliance opens the door to travel, competition and racing at the next level.
Your equipment
For 95% of our BDOC racers their equipment is already compliant for Motorsport UK racing. But many don’t realise it.
Most karts in the last 10 years will be Motorsport UK compliant. There might be small nuances in class rules but if you’re unsure speak to someone at the club. If you compete in BDOC ask the scrutineers to point out anything you may need to look at for MSUK compliance.
The other area of concern for competitors is racewear. To compete in Motorsport UK you must use a Motorsport specific helmet – typically rated by SNELL. There are SNELL helmets for all budgets and we highly recommend competitors to consider these helmets for open racing too. Race suits don’t have an expiry date when it comes to karting. So long as the suit is in good condition and CIK-FIA approved (typically standard 2001-1 or 2013-1 or 8877-2022 Grade 1 or 2) you will pass scrutineering. Race boots must simply covery your ankles and gloves in good condition.
Getting a licence
Is as simple as buying your ‘First licence starter pack’ and booking an ARKS test with our ARKS Examiner Martin Towler.
To get started you need to purchase your first licence pack from Motorsport UK which currently costs £78. This will provide you with the information you require to compelte the ARKS exams which includes a driven and multiple-option test.
The ARKS test itself costs £50 with GKC offering 50% off to GKC members, making it only £25. You will be required to lap the circuit under supervision of the ARKS examiner to demonstrate you’re comptent and safe on circuit. To finish the test you will complete a multiple choice test on flags and safety related topics. The ARKS examiner will support you throughout the process.
