Scottish Champions Crowned at Boyndie Drome

Grampian Kart Club welcomed 99 drivers from across the UK to Boyndie Drome Circuit near Banff for the 2026 Crest Glazing Scottish Karting Championships on 18-19 July.

The prestigious two-day event, which rotates between Scotland’s circuits every four years, showcased eight classes ranging from six-year-old Bambino drivers to 90mph KZ2 gearbox karts.

Ahead of the championship, Grampian Kart Club invested significantly in the venue with the installation of digital marshal light panels and a full-colour driver information screen, enhancing both safety and the competitor experience. British Kart Championships Race Director Dan Ashton headed the Motorsport UK officiating team, while the event was streamed live for the first time by Karting Live TV, thanks to principal sponsor Crest Glazing and the support of class sponsors.

Large crowds lined the circuit across the weekend to witness two days of close, competitive racing as Scotland’s newest champions were crowned.

Bambino (6-8 years) - Sponsored by Mermazing Swimming

Regan Abercrombie produced a composed drive to become Scottish Bambino Champion after chasing down early leader Walter Forrest. Forrest controlled the opening laps before Abercrombie completed the decisive move at MTM Bend on lap seven. Zak Macdonald looked set for a strong finish before retiring with engine trouble, leaving Ross Elder to complete the podium.

Honda Cadets (8-12 years) - Sponsored by Ewens of Cornhill

Bruno Simonelli launched into the lead from the second row, but Luca Bicocchi fought back at Kevin’s on lap three and steadily pulled away to claim the Scottish Championship. Oscar Forbes also impressed, climbing through the field to secure the final podium position.

Micro Max (8-12 years) - Sponsored by R. Strachan Metal Fabricators

Luca Bicocchi made the early running before Benjamin Finlay swept into the lead on lap two and steadily stretched clear to secure the championship by six seconds. Behind him, a thrilling battle unfolded for the remaining podium places as Lucas Sebright charged through the field and repeatedly traded positions with Bicocchi in the closing laps.

Inter Max (10-13 years) - Sponsored by Rolco Powder Coating

Hamish Gordon was untouchable at the front, converting pole position into a commanding lights-to-flag victory. Drama unfolded behind as Aarryn Rigg recovered brilliantly after an early mistake dropped him to seventh. Lewis Kirkaldy initially finished third but was excluded after post-race scrutineering due to an engine discrepancy, promoting Louis Pyper onto the podium.

Junior Max (10-13 years) - Sponsored by Motive Offshore

Nathaniel Gray made a superb start from third on the grid and was never headed throughout the 25-lap final to secure the Scottish title. Lewis Stewart moved into second early on before Lewis Reid capitalised on a mistake from James Darling to complete the podium after an action-packed race.

Senior Max 162 (16 years+) - Sponsored by Sutherlands

The Kraft Motorsport trio of Max Taylor, Rhys Baillie and Leo Massie broke clear of the field in a superb contest. Baillie briefly led before Taylor reclaimed first place, while Massie piled on relentless pressure throughout the closing laps. Taylor held on by just a tenth of a second to lift the Scottish title after 26 thrilling laps.

Les Taylor controlled proceedings from the front, building a comfortable advantage over Braydon Donoghue in the opening stages. Donoghue’s late retirement elevated Stewart McLennan into second, while Chris Waddell completed the championship podium after a consistent drive.

KZ2 Gearbox (16 years+) - Sponsored by 2 Forge

A dramatic KZ2 final began with a red flag following a multi-kart incident at the top of the circuit. The restart produced another intense battle as Joe Charlton initially led before Ally Smith took control. Alexander Hawcutt timed his charge perfectly, passing both Reece Duthie and Smith in the closing stages to claim the Scottish Championship after one of the races of the weekend.

3rd – Reece Duthie (Peterhead)

Trophies were presented outside the clubhouse by Rick Scott of Crest Glazing Ltd, with the traditional champagne celebrations rounding off a memorable weekend.

Grampian Kart Club now looks ahead to the next meeting at Boyndie Drome, Round 4 of the Boyndie Drome Open Challenge on Sunday 9 August.
